Peter's Psychic Pigskin Predictions

2001 Draft Review - Part II

April 29, 2001
Author: Peter Hansen

Rating: N/A out of 10
Total votes: 0
#3 Browns
1 Gerard Warren: (early in 1st year – *1 P.B.*). Just the run stuffer Davis can’t live without, and which the Browns have been without. He will soon live up to his moniker – “big money”. If nothing else he’ll free up Courtney Brown from constant double blocking. If not, he’ll at least make a lot of backfield plays himself.
2 Quincy Morgan: (2nd-3rd year). He was picked one selection earlier than the Browns other two second round receivers, yet has more dominant potential. He still has to improve his consistency at times, and if he does, he can make Browns fans forget all about not taking David Terrell with their third pick. If not, Warren had better be another Warren – Sapp, whom he compares favorably to.
3 James Jackson: (spot starter). It might have been Davis’ bias toward his Miami guy that let him pass up Kevin Barlow, who has better pro potential. Jackson looks like Errict Rhett with a little more of a kick.
4 Anthony Henry: Well liked by Mel Kiper, (though that could just as well be irrelevant).
5 Jeremiah Pharms: Like the disappointing Rahim Abdullah, he’s best as a OLB-DE hybrid. He went from a strong safety to a defensive lineman while at UW. All the growing and position switched seems to have disturbed his development.
6 Micheal Jameson: Despite drafting three corners last year, they try another two this year to add to the inconsistent stable, since they’ll try Jameson there.
7 Paul Zukauskas: Certainly a solid run blocker, who could end uop starting sooner than later, due to some horrible guards on the team.
7 Andre King: A mature receiver, who Davis must have taking a liking to at Miami. He had a possible first day grade coming out of high school, but age 28 is very inexperienced since he languished in the minor leagues.

What the %$&#?!?!”: Despite the free agent additon of Ross Verba, the Browns still have an extremely leaky line that needed to be more fortified through the draft. Maybe Davis is holding out next yerar for the mountaionous Miami Hurricane, Bryant McKinnie. Otherwise, Davis did a fine job of filling in his needs.

#4 Bengals
1 Justin Smith: (1st day starter – *1 P.B.*). How could this be, a pass rush from upfront in Cincinatti under the supervision of Mike Brown?
2 Chad Johnson (3rd year): Cincy hope they got another talented wide-out who fell to the second round as what happened with Carl Pickens, Darnay Scott (and possibly Cris Collinsworth).
3 Sean Brewer:: Questonable pigskin abillity.. The 49ers have had success with third round tight ends from the state of California --. Brent Jones and Greg Clarke. The Bengals hope for the same with this late rising player from San Jose State.
4 Rudi Johnson: (spot starter). Corey Dillon will eventually be saved from Cincy. Johnson is also a great between the tackle runner, but may not be able to do so with the speed of the pro game.
5 Victor Leyva: This guard could be a big help, though he is likely to limited to ever start.
6 Riall Johnson: He could be a third down specialist sacking the passer as a OLB. Special teams are much likelier his ticket however.
7 T.J. Houshmandzadeh: He ran a 4.38 for the Bengals, after going flatline with a clocking in the 5 second range, in an earlier work-out.

#5 Chargers
1 LaiDanian Tomlinson: (Day one starter – *1 P.B.*). Norv Turner made his last two starting running backs into stars, but had no one on the roster his offense could have clicked with. LT will be given the keys to his offensive machine.
2 Drew Brees: (3rd year). It was a posibility that Brees would “blow” in the pro’s, but in San Diego, he will be coming into a tailor made situation for him, with this offense that demands passing patience and accuracy -- not a supèr strong arm.
3 Tay Cody: He will be a career nickel back. Though he shares breeding grounds with Deion Sanders, he is the antithesis of him as a tackling machine that lacks deep speed. In fact, he is the best tackler at his position, yet has the slowest 40 time of all corners in the draft (and in the league) with his 4.7 personal work-out timing.
5 Elliott Silvers: (5th year). Chad Ward was the big name player on Washington’s line, but Elliott has the much superior wingspan and doesn’t lack for toughness.
4 Carlos Polk: (5th year). If not asked to do anything more than stop the run, Polk could easily be a starter, especially on a team loaded with fringe players.
5 Zeke Moreno: This has to be a first. Two brothers – Moses and Zeke, playing on the opposite sides of the ball on the same team. He could be a poor man’s – a very poor man’s Junior Seau.
7 Brandon Gorin: With so many run blockers on the roster, Gorin could make it with his pass blocking experience.
7 Robert Carswell: Despite his run defense emphasis, he was strangely a free safety at Clemson. As a back-up to Rodney Harrison, he could surprise and be his worthey successor down the line. For now, the Chargers have a charged up special teamer.

What the &%$@?!?!: The Chargers actually had a draft that wasn’t chock-full of reached for unwanted commodities, and didn’t give up the future to fulfill their needs. Bobby Beathard must be turning over on his surf board.

#6 Pats
1 Richard Seymour: (Day one starter). He is not the typical Bill Bellichek run stuffer: However with the gaping holes at defensive tackle, he should see immediate playing time (maybe even at DE).
2 Matt Light: (3rd year). A versatile lineman – that’s all that matters to Bellichik. He was not someone to trade up for however.
3 Brock Williams: Will be expected to be groomed into a nickel back, but the Pats will have another
toasted Otis and Antonio situation at corner, if they ever attempt to start Williams.
4 Jabari Holloway (fifth year). He is just what Belichik wants in a tight end – a blocker. Yet he is athletic enough to possibly develop into a much needed outlet for Drew Bledsoe.
5 Hakim Akbar: (fifth year). Despite the team already having the clone of Akbar in Lawyer Milloy, he was impossible to pass up in the fifth. He could be a Pro Bowl special teamer, which they recently lost in Larry Whigham, and then take over for Milloy when his contract is over, or even allow the Pats to trade the great Milloy before that.
6 Arthur Love: Neither tight end got a legitamite chance to catch the ball in college, because of the offenses they were in, but Love has some potential as a receiver, but its as untapped as a yet to be touched keg.
6 Leonard Myers: Shouldn’t be counted on in coverage – another special teamer.
7 Owen Pochman: A strange selection, since they have a decent kicker, and Pochman doesn’t have too much potential.
7 T.J. Turner: Has a very good chance to become a solid back up in the middle, like Pepper Johnson once was for Belichek with the Giants.

What the &%$!?!? is Belichek running a war room for? He reached for everyone in day one. At least there first and fourth round picks are guaranteed to be of more benefit than last years’.

#7 49ers
1 Andre Carter: (year one – *1 P.B.*) Steve Mariucci recruited him to Cal. He has been said to be very fond of him as a player and a person. He could bring back the elephant piosition, which the team used so successfully with the likes of Charles Haley, whom he happens to comparable very favorably to.
2 Jamie Winborn: (3rd year). Very much of a surprise selection, with their free agent signing of Derek Smith at MLB. Someone is going to have to go outside. Winborne sure has the speed to.
3 Kevin Barlow: (3rd year ): Very much liked by them. He could start as a rookie if he doesn’t cough up the ball too much.
6 Menson Hollowy: The 49ers will be in need of a free agernt signing, since this guy surely won’t be pushing to start any time soon.
6 Rashad Holmnan: Made a name for himself at the combine.
6 Cedric Wilson: Could be a nifty nickelback to give them some speed at receiver.
6 Alex Lincoln: A former walk-on, who doeasn’t quite live up to athletic ability on paper, though he shows the effort.
7 Eric Johnson: Bill Walsh wanted to trade up for this unknown receiver specialist.

What the &%$#@?!?!: Why did they not pick an offensive tackle, center, or a guard?

#8 Bears
1 David Terrell: (day one starter -- *1 P.B.*). He represents the anti-bust pick, which the Bears have drudged up in the draft all too often. They wanted Andre Carter, but they surely couldn’t have realisticly imagined Terrell would still there for their delightful taking. He will create a twin tower combination with Marcus Robinson. Despite various draft gurus having predicted at various stages Koren Robinson, Santana Moss, or even Chris Chambers for this pick, only the pick of Terrell was acceptable, especially considering the receiver position was not really one of need with all the potential at the position.
2 Anthony Thomas: (year 3 starter). He will bring power to the Bears new offense. However, it was surprise they didn’t opt to take Lamont Jordan instead. Especially considering the Bears’ bad batch of fullbacks, thomas could see time at fullback.
3 Mike Gandy: (3rd year). He will add the power upfront which Thomas is used to.
4 Karon Riley: The team could really use his pass rushing ability on third downs.
5 Bernard Robertson: A solid pass protector which will add some needed depth.

What the &/%&$?ª!?! was Terrell still doing on the board? This won’t be any 8th pick of last year, like Plaxico Burress. It will at least be as good as that of David Boston, the previous year’s #8. Neither will he be anything like a previous Wolverine, Desmond Howard.
