We stay up north this week but we leave our last road course of the schedule and visit a track in which we have already visited once this season and is paved in history. Nasser has been racing at 2 miles, 18 degree (relatively flat) track for more than 20 years. Within that time, and in recent history, the stars of this track have stood out. Since qualifying has already happened, this week’s column is based on both qualifying and on track records. The first pick for this week is Dale Jarrett. In 31 career starts at Michigan, DJ has 3 wins, 12 top 5s and 17 top 10s. He just seems comfortable at Michigan. He finished second when the Cup was at Michigan a few short weeks ago in June and in the past seven races here he has placed in the top 10, 5 times. And on top of his records, he qualified 8th here this week. DJ sits in 12th in the overall standings right now, and he is definitely going to be a factor Sunday. Bill Elliot has been showing in recent weeks what has kept him a Cup contender for so many years. He won two back to back before Sears Point and has held a handful of poles. And Michigan is just another good track on his table. In 49 career starts at Michigan, Elliott has 7 wins, 24 top 5s and 29 top 10s. In the past seven races here, he has finished in the top 10 in 3 of 7. He starts 6th this week, after sitting on the pole for about half qualifying. Elliott will be in the top 10 at the end of tomorrow’s race, and he just may be the car in victory lane. Rusty Wallace is another oldie but goodie at Michigan. Regardless of his 37th provisional start, Wallace has a record to watch at Michigan. In 37 career starts, he has 5 wins, 16 top 5s and 20 top 10s. He has 3 top 10s in the past 7 races here, including 7th place finish here in June. He is a safe purchase for this week. Others to watch this week are Ryan Newman, Michael Waltrip and Tony Stewart. Newman is a rookie but he has been on a role. In his 2 career starts here at this track, he has 2 top 5s. He qualified 9th and is currently sitting in 9th place in the overall standings. I would consider him a good pick this week. He will be in my lineup. Waltrip doesn’t have a killer record at Michigan, but he qualified well this week and Waltrip has been showing up at places he doesn’t normally shine this year. He finished 4th here last time and he starts on the 2nd row this weekend. Stewart, the winner of last week’s Sears Point, is good wherever he roams. He starts 24th this week, although he has a decent record at Michigan. In his 7 career starts, he has 1 win, 2 top 5s and 3 top 10s. Jimmie Johnson, the rookie who can’t do any wrong, and Steve Park, the perennial hurt guy, are also decent picks this week. Sorry so late.
