This week we leave the track and venture onto the road. Drivers are tested as they leave their comfort zones of going in circles (or ovals) as it may be and they are forced to instead practice both their left hand AND right hand turns. Enough said. This weeks picks. Jeff Gordon. The poor man hasn't had a win in 25 races and he has a hell of a record at this track. He has won three of the last four races here and he has been in the top 3 in the last five races here. He apprently has no problems racing off-track and this track just might give him the opportunity to get that win he has been looking so hard for. He starts in the fourth position and if things go his way, as they just haven't seemed to do this season, he could find himself in the points lead. Somehow without a spectacular season he has flown his way under the radar up into the top 3 in points. If anything gives him motive to win, I would guess his chances for moving ahead of point leader Sterling Marlin just might be it. Tony Stewart was born to race. This man has spent plenty of time off track in a series of different types of cars. And that experience is always pretty obvious at Sears Point. He won last years race here and placed 10th the year before. This year he starts on the pole and Tony is hard to beat when he starts up front. Barring any problems with his car, or his pit stops, I would definately say Tony is a contender. And from a true Tony fan, he needs another win. Rusty Wallace, who starts 8th, will be worth watching this week as well. He has placed in the top 10 in 4 of the last five races and he seems to be a veteran at this track. He won the race in 1996 and does well year after year. He has had a quiet year in the cup this season but he is a seasoned driver and he may show his talent this week. Others to watch this week include Ricky Rudd, who starts 7th, and Mark Martin, who starts 12th. These two are also seasoned drivers who seem to do well at this track. Both have had good standings in the last few years at Sears Point and I would look for them to end up near the top. Others who don't have the record here but who are worth watching are Matt Kennseth, Bill Elliot and Jimmie Johnson. All three have pretty good starting positions Sunday and have been running consist this year. The are worth keeping an eye on. Sorry so short this week. Work calls. I will post this column each Friday afternoon. The ideas are strictly mine, with a little bit of help from the statistics and some of my racing enthusiast friends.
