I will start with the truth: I am a Texas girl. So regardless of anything, I am going to love racing in Texas, just because. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a super speedway, with decent bankings. It also doesn’t hurt that it reminds me of Daytona, a track I have a love for. And lastly, it certain doesn’t hurt that the “real” Nascar writers are predicting this is going to be a fast, fast race. And if the qualifying speeds are anything, it will be a fast, fast race. My picks this week are not going to go strictly on stats, because well a track that has been repaved is a new track. We could go directly on stats but it would be faulty. So I am going to go somewhat on stats, and somewhat on my gut feelings. Probably my top pick for this week is Junior, himself. He has kind of gotten into the groove with his last several races having top 10, even top five finishes. He has found that love for racing that defines who he was, much as it did for his father. And even more defining is that Little E LOVES big tracks, and he LOVES Texas. He won his first Busch series race and his first Cup race at Texas and he runs well on the longer, faster tracks. And he doesn’t have a win yet this season. I can only imagine that this would be his perfect place to pick up his first win, one of many I suspect he will pick up this season. Little E starts this week in the 9th spot, which we all know is absolutely nothing for him. My second pick is Dale Jarrett. He starts the race in fifth and he has a pretty good track record at Texas. He has three top-five finishes in the last five races, one of which was a win. He seems to be comfortable in the long-star state and he will be racing for his first win of the season. My next pick is Jeff Burton. He unfortunately starts back in 37th place but he is an expert at coming from behind. He has three top 10’s in the last five races, including a win in 1997. He is also looking for his first win of the season and he just might be in the running in Texas. Bill Elliott, who I am thrilled is starting on the pole, also might be something to watch in the big race. We know he is comfortable at the super speedways, having a hell of a run at Daytona. While he has ridden under the radar per say this year so far, he is still in the top 15. He is definitely worth watching. Others to watch include Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie is the rookie that could. He sits in the top five in points right now and he has been recording one steady race after another. He starts in 13th this week and he is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Tony Stewart is another that is definitely worth watching. He had the Easter holiday to work on healing his injuries from Bristol and he loves super speedways. Much like Little E, he feels he has something to prove after being so highly picked at Daytona and getting tied up in one of the many wrecks at that derby. I wouldn’t count Tony out of anything, and his 29th place start while it won’t help, won’t be the end of him. Especially at a track where accidents may fly this Sunday. And the who, knows maybe list includes Elliot Sadler, who also starts on the front row. He has had a notable season this far and he wouldn’t be a bad bet to place. Same for Jeff Gordon (who has had a terrible season thus far) and starts in 26th. You can bet on two things for this race. One being that it will be a high cautioned race…the last three races averaging 10 cautions in each race and there should be plenty of lead changes, with an average of 19 cautions in the last three races. So sit back and enjoy some racing: Texas style.
