Defending Champ: Tiger Woods
Vijay Singh ended up running away with Arnie's event last week at Bay Hill, while Tiger folded after an opening round 64. I wasn't completely on the right track with the non-Americans succeeding at Bay Hill, but I was able to get some points out of it. Too bad I didn't pick the guy from Fiji. If Sergio Garcia could putt the same way in stroke play as he does in match play, he'd be a consistent contender. Vaughn Taylor is making a name for himself each week and he can really roll the rock.
THIS WEEK...
There's been a shakeup in this event over the last year. Tiger is the defending champion of the tournament, which really means nothing considering the golf course was in England. What does matter is that Tiger has won the last two tournaments at Doral. They don't call this course "The Monster" for nothing. It has been referred to as a "big hitter's paradise" and the 18th hole is the hardest hole on Tour. This usually means we're in for an exciting finish.
MY PICKS...
"A" Players- You know Tiger will find his swing at some point and I imagine he's quite frustrated after what happened last week. If he's upset, he'll probably win. I won't give up on Tiger and I'm sure most of you won't either. Vijay would be the obvious other choice. He's clearly found his groove and is playing as well as he's ever played. If you don't like Vijay, I'd pick Luke Donald or Adam Scott.
FINAL "A" PICKS: Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh
"B" Players- Sergio has been producing for me. He's been around every week and just has not been able to score when he needs to. DON'T PICK JUSTIN ROSE! I've picked him twice and both times he withdrew. He's having back issues and that's never good. John Rollins, who I like to call "The Barn", surely looks likes like he'd have the best chance of conquering a monster. Plus, he's made the cut in 8 out of 9 tournaments and is playing the best golf of his life. Chad Campbell switched drivers and has noticed that he can control it and maneuver the ball easier. Could it be his week?
FINAL "B" PICKS: John Rollins, Sergio Garcia, Chad Campbell, Padraig Harrington
"C" Players: I always like Trevor Immelman in this class but I'm going to leave him off my list this week because we have a limited number of starts for each player. So, I'm hoping Henrik Stenson can bring those bombs he was launching at the Accenture Match Play to Doral this week. Long ball Bubba Watson isn't going to be around to slay "The Monster."
FINAL "C" PICKS: Henrik Stenson and Brett Wetterich
Good Luck!
