Honda Classic Preview
PGA National Champion Golf Course
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida
Defending Champ: Luke Donald
Let me start by saying how disappointed I was that my particular fantasy website couldn't come up with a formula to use the Accenture Match Play as an event last week. What an event! There were some powerhouse matches. There really is nothing like match play golf. I'd be in favor of making one of the majors a match play event, but that's not happening any time soon. So, in a field full of no names, Fred Funk and Cameron Beckman brought me some success last week in Mexico. Sure enough, the week I just pick players without doing any research ended up being my best of the season so far.
THIS WEEK...
Luke Donald finished two shots ahead of Geoff Ogilvy to win the Honda Classic last season. Ogilvy opted out of this week's tournament which makes Donald the clear cut favorite in a rather weak field. David Toms finished in a tie for third last year with Billy Mayfair. Davis Love III has finished as the runner up twice in this event.
MY PICKS...
"A" Players- As steady as Luke Donald is, I'm going to take a pass on him this week. He was eliminated from the Accenture Match Play in the second round and just didn't look like himself. David Toms is my guy this week. He's due and its only a matter of time before we see him hoisting another trophy. I think this is the week. After Toms, the three safest picks would be Furyk, Donald, or Love.
Final "A" Picks: Jim Furyk and David Toms
"B" Players- Paddy Harrington won the event in 05 and when you mix the way he's been playing and his success at the golf course being played this week, it should make for a nice week for the wee Irishman. Jeff Quinney's name looked like a good pick but he's a west coast guy and hasn't proved he can play anywhere else. Fred Funk was great last week until Saturday when he had to get on course treatment to calm down an ailing back. Not the news you want to hear for an aging golf pro. Chris Dimarco looks as though he's ready to contend again and Robert Allenby has been as steady as anyone in the "B" class.
Final "B" Picks: Padraig Harrington, Chris Dimarco, Robert Allenby, Jerry Kelly
"C" Players- With Immelman and Matteson out, its a "C" class free for all. Joe Ogilvy has done as well at the Honda as anyone in the class. Pat Perez and Vaughn Taylor also performed well for me last week. Cliff Kresge hasn't missed a cut in five events. Paul Azinger and Mark Calcavecchia are veterans that could be around for the weekend.
Final "C" Picks: Pat Perez and Kevin Sutherland
Good luck golf fans!
