I'm still rather new to the whole fantasy golf thing but I'm starting to have some success. I have a problem with the way my league is scored but that's a whole different article. Maybe I'm just getting lucky or maybe my formula is successful, either way I'm winning.
In my league we pick two A players, four B players, and two C players before the tourney starts. Of these players you can pick one A player, two B players, and one C player to play. You can change which players you want to start before each round. Here are some things to remember...
1) Pick the best player
Yeah I know, its not groundbreaking stuff but sometimes we tend to try and go with a hunch that really doesn't make much sense. Obviously, if Tiger Woods is in the tournament, don't pass him up. Tiger rarely misses the weekend action and that is essential in fantasy golf. If your players miss the cut you're in deep trouble.
2) What if Tiger isn't playing?
Well, this happens much more than the PGA Tour would like but it makes for some exciting golf. Depending on the course and conditions, I would keep a few players in mind. If they're playing out west I would highly recommend Phil Mickelson every time. He has dominated in the same region he grew up as a junior golf legend. Jim Furyk plays well in the Midwest. He won the US Open at Olympia Fields and has won the Western Open, both in IL, and won The Memorial in Ohio. Some guys just play better on certain courses and different types kinds of terrain. Find them!
3) Know the players.
Know what they can do. Try to matchup the skills of the player with the golf course that is being played that week. If the course is short and tight, put a premium on accuracy and putting. Furyk, Goosen, Weir are players that succeed in these settings. If the course is long and fairly wide open I'd go with a longer, more powerful player. Mickelson plays well when he can air it out. Vijay Singh is the same way and has had a very good start to 07.
4) What about B and C players?
Hmm...Good question. These players will decide who does well in fantasy and who doesn't. You only pick two A players and after that the rest are pretty much even. Like I said before, the importance of having your players make the cut is vital. Look at last year's tournament results and monitor who has been playing well of late. Confidence is key in golf. Go with a guy who is playing well and feeling good. Early this season Trevor Immelman has done well and Paul Goydos even won, both C players. Make sure you keep track of how your B players are doing. There are four of these players and you can change who you want playing each day. You don't want to be starting a guy who missed the cut because you weren't paying attention.
5) Have fun with it
With the B and C players, you have to pick at least one sleeper. After all, that's what makes fantasy sports great. Pick a guy you like or some guy you've never heard of. If he wins, you'll be forever grateful.
